Sharing with Facebook
As everyone knows, Facebook is huge. People of all ages and backgrounds have found uses for it that suit their needs and continue to hold their appeal. One of the most popular features on Facebook is the ability to share photos of yourself and your friends for others to see. College-age adults seem to appreciate this feature as much as any. Pictures have the ability, in one concise frame, to tell an interesting narrative. Since this is something that already interests students, I find it useful to let them experiment with Facebook--something already very familiar to them--in a language they are still struggling to get a handle on.
For the activity posted on this site, students were asked to select 3 photos of themselves on Facebook, and then to speak 2-3 sentences about each picture to the class. Classmates were then encouraged to ask follow-up questions about what was described. At the end of the period, students were asked to select one of their three photos to email to me, along with a written description of their chosen photo.
